Author’s Note: I was inspired, what can I say? This is based on a real life experience – my brother’s. Well, part of it anyway.

She was only six when they moved to another house. She was furious with her parents for taking her out of her familiar surroundings and forcing her into a totally new world. She sulked weeks before they were going to move. Deep down, she knew it was wrong to sulk and that she was making her parents miserable, but she didn’t care.

Boxes were packed. Last-minute arrangements were made. The little girl didn’t help at all. Although her little sister, Michelle, who was four, was running around helping where she was and wasn’t needed, the little girl wouldn’t like a finger to help.

The big day soon arrived. The boxes were loaded onto a truck and the family was bundled into the car. But the little girl wasn’t ready to leave. She dashed back into the house suddenly. Her mom went in to get her and found her hugging a pillar, sobbing hysterically.

Her mom pried her fingers from the pillar and half-carried, half-dragged the little girl into the car, and they left. When they reached the ‘new place’, as her mom called it, the young girl had to stifle a gasp of awe. It was a beautiful house. There was a big garden and a huge swimming pool. Michelle jumped out of the car before it had completely stopped moving. “Like house!” she squealed in delight. “House good!”

The little girl stepped out of the car uncertainly. Her parents were already in the house, unpacking. She wandered around the poolside. Suddenly, Michelle squealed. Startled, the little girl fell into the pool, head first. She struggled frantically, gasping for air. She heard her mom and Sarah scream, know they were frozen with fear and panicked. I’m going to die! she thought.

She was on the brink of hysteria when suddenly, a pair of strong arms lifted her swiftly out of the water. She coughed and spluttered, trying to get some air. When she had regained her breath, she gazed up and smiled. He smiled back. “I’m going to learn how to swim,” she said, weakly, and they both laughed.

That happened seven years ago. I was that little girl. And I want to give a big thank-you to the hero who saved me – my dad. Thanks for always being there, dad.

And dad?

Thanks for teaching me how to swim.
