Ubrina's Crush

“No!” she was blushing like crazy, and her next option was to try and hide her face in Vanessa’s skirt. “No! I swear, if you try wave my hand for me one more time, I will *kill* you.”

“What?” Vanessa protested, “Ubrina! He obviously wants to see you!”

“No he doesn’t!”

“Yes he does!”

“No he doesn’t!”

“Does!”

“Doesn’t!”

“What do you know anyway?” Ubrina was scowling, still keeping her face down, eyes glued to the floor just in case he really was looking her way. “We’re sitting in the stands, and he’s too far away to be able to really see us!”

Vanessa looked at Ubrina like she was crazy.

“Don’t even say it.” Ubrina growled, feeling hideously embarrassed. The next event was announced, and when *his* name was called over the PA system, Vanessa drove her elbow into Ubrina’s gut, causing the swimmer to yelp, and blush a brighter shade of red. “Stop it!”

One of the girls sitting nearby sent them a death glare, which Vanessa calmly returned. “He likes you. He *obviously* likes you, and you’re sitting here, in the damn stands, refusing to do anything about it! Ubrina!”

Ubrina refused to rise to the bait. “This is the nationals, you moron. Now act like… like you should be acting, and *stop* pointing him out to me!”

“Okay, jeez.” Vanessa threw her hands up in the air. “Fine, don’t listen to me on this one.” They watched the rest of the event in silence, and when he won (naturally), Vanessa turned back to Ubrina, who was cheering wildly. When the girl had finally calmed herself down, she caught Vanessa smirking at her.

“What?”

“You are so smitten. When he actually…”

Ubrina had tuned her out after the first few words or so. Her attention had been drawn back to her half-naked crush. He had just climbed out of the pool, and he was walking RIGHT up to her. Coming slowly closer and closer, and Ubrina thought her heart might jump right out of her chest. “Oh, my god,” she was whispering to herself. “Oh my god my god my god my god my god my god my god… what is he *doing*?”

It was almost too much to take in when he finally stood right in front of her. There was a cheeky wink on his part, and then a quiet, “hello.”

Ubrina stood, gaping, opening and closing her mouth like a goldfish. “Hi,” she wanted to say, but all she could manage was a soft squeak. *After* he had walked away.

She turned back to the rest of the swimmers, her eyes wide and round and large. “That was. HE just. It was. Oh my *god*!”

Vanessa burst out laughing, “God, you idiot! Say hi back! Why didn’t you say anything back?!”

Ubrina groaned as choruses of laughter went up around her. “I don’t know! I couldn’t! I bet he thinks I’m a complete idiot!”

Vanessa nudged Ubrina again, grinning widely. “I told you he liked you. But would you listen to me? Noooo, of course not. You simply refused, so he has to come up and prove it to you. And when he does, you still don’t believe it. You don’t even talk to him!”

“I tried!” It was a weak protest, and they all knew it. “I was in a state of shock! What did you want me to do? Start throwing confetti and singing ‘Thank God I Found You’?!”

Vanessa sighed, patting Ubrina’s shoulder sympathetically. “Maybe you’ll actually learn how to deal with boys one day. I’ll have fun watching you mess up till then, though.”

“Oh, wow, thanks. You’re really supportive. Have I mentioned how nice you are?” Ubrina had an eyebrow raised sarcastically.

“You don’t have to thank me,” Vanessa’s smile was sugary sweet. “Just. Oh! Ubrina, Ubrina, look! He’s coming back!”

Ubrina suddenly didn’t dare to turn back around. “Who?” She didn’t even know why she was whispering.

“Him! HIM!”

“Oh no!” Ubrina’s heart was fluttering madly in her chest.

She turned around slowly, and a slow, dazzling smile greeted her. He was right there, close enough to touch, almost. And then he did. He reached out and gently ran a finger across her shoulder. “Hi.”

His touch burned, she decided, and she never wanted to pull away. Butterflies were stampeding her stomach, and Ubrina had to swallow hard to get her breath back. “Um,” she was still squeaking. ‘God, girl!’ she cursed inwardly, ‘Get a grip!’

“Hi.” She whispered, and blushed till the tips of her ears turned red, reluctantly yanking herself from his touch and all but running to the toilet.

He watched her go, an amused smile lingering a moment on his lips. “What’s up with her?”

Vanessa frowned, narrowing her eyes at the disappearing figure. “I have absolutely
no idea.”

“Ubrina!”

“Not now, Vanessa.”

“Ubrinaaaaaa!”

“Go away, Vanessa.”

“Uuuuubbrrriiinnnaaaaaa!”

“WHAT?!”

“Open the door this instant!”

“Why?”

“You were so unenthusiastic!”

“What are you *talking* about?”

“Open the damn toilet door!”

“Why?”

“Why didn’t you try making conversation?” Vanessa demanded, impatiently tapping her foot against the cool marble floor.

“I tried!” Ubrina insisted, keeping the door firmly locked.

“Well, you’re really lousy at trying.”

“Piss off.”

Ubrina nodded firmly, psyching herself up. ‘The next time I see him,’ she decided, ‘I will wave madly. And I will *say* hi.’

She added quickly, ‘And I will not squeak!’

Stepping out of the toilet resolutely, Ubrina scanned the poolside for any sign of him. When he was finally within her range of sight, she yelled his name, waving wildly when he turned to her.

He looked confused for a split second, and then a bright grin spread across his features, and he nodded.

The tips of Ubrina’s ears began to turn red again, and she cringed inwardly as she re-ducked into the toilet, hardly able to believe what she’d just done.

“Stupid, stupid, stupid!” She was furious with herself. Furious, and also completely and utterly humiliated. “Why can’t I just get this stupid boy thing right?!”
